Navicula have been a band since 1996. That's long enough to have a history — recording sessions at Record Plant Studios in Hollywood, a Sony record deal, the departure of founding drummer Gembull Rai after twenty years, the death of bassist Made Indra Dwi Putra in 2018, a 2021 Lifetime Achievement Award at Anugerah Musik Bali.
In this episode, current and former band members walk through all of it, using one song — "Merdeka," which means freedom — as the thread. What did they think freedom meant in 1996? What do they think it means now? The honest answer, from several of them, is that the word has been used too many times and still hasn't been made good on.
